Gotland

We are working in Gotland with our Swedish partners, conducting a range of activities. We have interacted with communities, policymakers and practitioners in the region to strengthen citizen participation with insights from the project.

Gotland's cement industry can transition towards less polluting processes, with fuel substitution, new cement grades and different materials in production, which is a process supported by the Just Transition Fund.

Gotland's cement production is responsible for about 3% of all of Sweden’s carbon footprint. Ceased production would result in negative consequences for infrastructural projects, the building sector, and the region's economy and employment.

Since the Industrial Revolution, Gotland’s rich natural resources have enabled limestone mining that has supported the economic prosperity of the region. Limestone is mostly used in the cement industry and today the island’s mines supply 75% of Sweden's cement usage.
